Step by step: How to make a microcement floor

SUBSTRATE QUALITY ASSESSMENT

The installation of a microcement floor requires careful preparation and understanding of the application process. Before you begin applying microcement to the floor, make sure that the substrate is stable. Remove any contaminants such as oils, waxes, plaster residues, etc., which is a key step in ensuring the adhesion of the microcement. If the substrate is uneven or non-uniform, it should be sanded down or leveled with self-leveling compounds or epoxy screed. Microcement is a decorative layer and is not intended to fill gaps or level the substrate, so it is important that the substrate is even and stable. The thickness of the microcement system itself on the floor is 2-3 mm.
If the substrate is cracked, reinforce it (proceed to the next steps) to prevent the cracks from transferring to the microcement.

PRIMING

Before applying microcement, the substrate must be properly prepared using a primer, e.g. FESTGRUNT. This increases the adhesion of subsequent layers and evens out the absorbency of the surface, preventing excessive penetration of polymers into the substrate.
The surface should be even, clean, and free of dust and contaminants. The primer is applied with a roller or brush and then left to dry for 2–4 hours before continuing work.

SUBSTRATE REINFORCEMENT

If the substrate on which you want to apply microcement is cracked, you must reinforce it to prevent cracks from transferring from the screed to the microcement.

1) If you have decided on FESTFLOOR TITAN microcement, choose TITAN BASE with mesh to reinforce the floor.
2) If you have decided on FESTFLOOR GO!, LIFE or HYDROFEST microcement, choose FESTFLOOR BASE with mesh to reinforce the substrate.
You can also choose ready-made microcement kits that include a base and mesh (buy here). Remember that a reinforced substrate ensures better stability and durability of the floor, minimizing the risk of cracks. After applying and drying the base coat, you can proceed with the application of microcement.
Check the technical data sheets to learn how to apply the reinforcing products correctly.

MICROCEMENT APPLICATION

The next step is to apply the microcement. You can use FESTFLOOR TITAN, FESTFLOOR LIFE, or FESTFLOOR GO! microcement to create your floor. For bathroom floors, use HYDROFEST or FESTFLOOR TITAN.
Microcement should be applied in two layers using a trowel. After the first layer has dried, sand it and vacuum thoroughly, then apply the second layer. Once dry, sand and vacuum again.
Detailed information for a specific system on drying times and sanding rules can be found in its technical data sheet.

SEALING

Finally, cover the floor with two coats of sealer. This step is essential to ensure that the microcement surface is resistant to abrasion and easy to maintain. The choice of the right protective product should be tailored to the intensity of use of the floor and the expected aesthetics of the final finish. Additionally, in areas exposed to water or dirt, you can use our varnish additives. These products are not mandatory, but are used to extend the life of the sealer.

Inspiration and trends in microcement flooring design

The use of microcement in modern interiors is a trend that is gaining popularity thanks to its versatility and aesthetics. It is a solution that blends in perfectly with a variety of interior design styles, from industrial spaces to minimalist and Scandinavian interiors. Thanks to its rich color palette and the possibility of creating unique textures, microcement is becoming an element that allows you to customize the floor to the character of the room.

The durability and ease of maintenance of microcement floors are further advantages that speak in favor of choosing microcement as a flooring material. Compared to traditional solutions such as parquet or ceramic tiles, microcement is highly resistant to abrasion and damage.
The ecological aspect is also important in an era of growing environmental awareness. Microcement, as an environmentally friendly material, can be used in projects focused on sustainable development. Its application does not require the removal of existing substrates, which minimizes construction waste and reduces carbon dioxide emissions, and this is another advantage that makes microcement a good solution for flooring.

Comparison of microcement with other flooring materials

Choosing the right flooring material is a crucial decision that affects not only the aesthetics but also the functionality and durability of a space. Microcement stands out from other flooring materials thanks to its unique properties. It offers:

  • High abrasion resistance – which is important in high-traffic areas.
  • Easy to clean – the smooth surface does not accumulate dirt and is easy to clean.
  • Can be applied to existing substrates – allowing for quick and less invasive renovation.

Compared to traditional solutions such as ceramic tiles or wooden parquet, microcement offers much greater flexibility in terms of personalization. The available palette of colors and textures allows you to create almost any floor appearance, from imitation concrete to a natural stone effect. What's more, the lack of joints makes the surface visually uniform, which is particularly appreciated in modern interior designs. On the other hand, materials such as laminate or vinyl, although more affordable, cannot match microcement in terms of durability and unique character.

Cleaning and maintenance of microcement floors

In order for microcement flooring to retain its aesthetic appearance and durability for many years, it is essential to use appropriate cleaning and maintenance methods. Regular and proper maintenance will help to avoid many problems, such as stains and scratches.
It is recommended to remove dust daily with a soft brush or mop, and to wash regularly with special microcement cleaning agents that do not contain aggressive chemicals, such as FestCleaner. It is important to avoid agents containing waxes or silicones, which can form undesirable layers on the surface.
For more stubborn stains, use dedicated products such as Power-FEST or FESTCalc. If you decide to use other cleaning products, always test the new cleaning agent on a small, inconspicuous area of the floor before applying it to a larger surface.

Specialized tip sheets are also available, which explain step by step how to care for microcement so that it will serve you for many years.

How long does microcement take to dry?

The drying process of microcement depends on environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity, but usually a layer of microcement dries within 12 hours. Full curing and final strength can take up to 28 days.

Is a microcement floor scratch-resistant?

Microcement flooring is relatively scratch-resistant, but like any surface, it can be damaged by heavy use or contact with sharp objects. FESTFLOOR offers several solutions for protecting microcement surfaces. It is important to make the right choice when applying microcement.

Is microcement available in different colors?

Yes, microcement is available in a wide range of colors. The possibility of choosing different pigments allows you to match the color of your microcement floor to your individual preferences and interior design. Before choosing a specific microcement color, it is worth ordering a color chart or 28 x 28 cm samples.

What are the recommendations for caring for microcement floors?

Microcement floors require regular cleaning with a soft cloth or mop and the use of neutral cleaning agents. Avoid agents containing strong acids or bases, which can damage the surface. It is also recommended to periodically apply wax or special protective preparations to help maintain the aesthetic appearance of the floor.

What is the price per square meter of microcement flooring?

The cost of microcement flooring depends on the microcement system chosen and the microcement application service, which depends on the surface area, the level of difficulty of the work, the region of the country, and the experience of the contractor.
